Klimatolozi su se konsenzualno usuglasili kako bi za postizanje cilja Pariškog sporazuma, prema kojem se globalni rast prosječnih temperatura do 2100. mora ograničiti na razinu daleko ispod dva stupnja Celzijusa višu od razina s kraja 19. stoljeća, nužno bilo da se rast prosječnih temperatura preokrene do 2025. No, bilo bi ih potrebno upogoniti u velikim razmjerima, brzo, silovito i zajedničkim naporima vlada i regulatora cijelog svijeta, a što bi prema procjenama autora studije BCG Henderson Institutea koštalo između 19 i 21 bilijuna dolara od danas do 2030. Ekonomske nejednakosti država su golem dio ovog problema. Istraživanje pokazuje da čak i ako Kina, sve članice EU-a, razvijene azijske države i SAD ograniče svoje emisije stakleničkih plinova, ciljevi Pariškog sporazuma i dalje ne bi bili ostvarivi. Svoje bi emisije trebale ograničiti i države koje nisu članice OECD-a, tzv. zemlje u razvoju.
 
Klimatolozi računaju kako bi za dostizanje ciljeva Pariškog sporazuma bilo potrebno da globalne emisije stakleničkih plinova padnu u prvoj polovici sljedećeg desetljeća i zatim nastave dramatično padati kako bi do 2040. svjetska populacija proizvodila upola manje stakleničkih plinova nego danas. Kroz mjere učinkovitosti, globalna ekonomska aktivnost morala bi postati daleko manje energetski intenzivna, uz daleko manje emisije ugljika.
 
No čak i u slučaju usporenog globalnog ekonomskog rasta, dostizanje pariških ciljeva bit će iznimno izazovno. Da bi se potreban dramatični pad korištenja fosilnih goriva ostvario, globalna proizvodnja energije, koja predstavlja četvrtinu stakleničkih plinova koje proizvodi čovjek trebala bi emitirati najmanje 70 posto manje ugljičnog dioksida do 2040. godine, na putu u dekarbonizaciju u budućnosti. To znači i dramatičan pad proizvodnje električne energije iz termoelektrana na ugljen i veće korištenje električne energije iz sunca i vjetra.
